Fashion lecturer launches provocative exhibition in Leeds

Gavin Fernandes (pictured right), Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries at Middlesex University, is exhibiting at Harewood House, Leeds as part of their 'Victorian Harewood' season which is open until 29 October 2017.

'Empire Line’ is a photographic narrative featuring and challenging the image of two social divisions; the ‘memsahibs,’ who were the British colonial, middle-class women who resided in India throughout the 19th century, and the native, indigenous women.

Gavin’s nine striking images depict subjects dressed in a combination of both 19th Century dress commonly worn by middle class British women of that period and indigenous Indian dress worn by different castes.

Lady Gaga wears fashion lecturers designs

Alex Noble, Lecturer in Fashion at Middlesex University, has designed the costumes for international popstar Lady Gaga in her latest music video John Wayne.

Briefed to create something between Dolly Parton, Elvis, a sci-fi space cowboy and Gaga herself, Alex was inspired to create a bleached denim, multi-fringe piece with giant triangle pleat silk sleeves.

“My advice to young people interested in a career in fashion would be work as hard as you can and take and make every opportunity available to you, no one’s going to do it for you and a lot of people are trying. Learn from others and use your peer group to collaborate, develop and show your ideas.” - Alex Noble

Graduate nominated for Annie Award

Adara Todd, BA Animation graduate, has been nominated for an Annie Award for her final year animated film Twiddly Things. The nomination is the latest in a series of successes for Adara - Twiddly Things won the WFTV Lifetime Shorts Competition in 2016, and was screened at festivals including the London International Film Festival and the Animateka Festival in Slovenia.

“I chose animation because my hobbies were writing stories and playing with Lego and making up scenarios, drawing, doing arts and crafts. I never thought they could be put together to be a career until I came to Middlesex,” -Adara Todd
